Throughout the history of textile development new technologies have played significant roles, both in the commercial and military sectors. In healthcare, non-woven fabrics have been developed to minimize contamination, technologies have been added to wound dressing fabrics to prevent infections, face masks have been used for years to minimize cross contamination, yet with all these advances microbial contamination remains the third largest cause of mortality in the U.S. after heart disease and cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Astonishingly 280 people die each day in the US as a result of hospital-acquired-infections (“HAI’s). and textiles, including doctor lab coats are considered vectors of disease.

A new technology, invented by members of AP Goldshield LLC, is an antimicrobial formulation [ Goldshield] with a unique ingredient which permits easy and fast surface penetration to textiles including inert materials such as polypropylene. This technology has tremendous application to textiles which will help mitigate the spread of these harmful organisms, and it will not leach off, providing for long term protection.

Upon application, this patented formula covalently bonds to the textile, or will cross link, preventing growth of bacteria, fungi, yeasts and certain viruses. It will also reduce bio-deterioration of the material, enhance product value and will exceed industry compliance standards for durability. Furthermore, it inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria in in-vitro tests.
